Despite their desperate efforts, Fox News can’t force Trump to debate on August 23. NBC News reports that the former President “is leaning heavily toward skipping that first debate”. He has acknowledged that him attending the debate would simply get “get them ratings!”. He is already 30 points ahead in the polls.

If there’s no Trump, then it’s easy to imagine who becomes the main attraction — Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis. Despite a slow slide in the polls, he is still technically in second place, behind the former President, although it doesn’t much feel like it.

And by main attraction, I mean, victim. Because, if DeSantis’ campaign has shown us anything so far, it’s that it’s not very attractive at all. If the field turns on DeSantis — which, let’s face it, they may have to do to improve their own standings — then I am not sure his campaign realistically make it any further. I can imagine the entire debate turning into a Christie/Rubio moment, only this time, everyone is Chris Christie.
