On the debate stage, Walz reminds me of Donald Trump.
In last night’s vice presidential debate between Tim Walz and J.D. Vance, we witnessed a particular dynamic that neither party will have been used to. That is, the more erudite, articulate, competent debater didn’t walk away with a landslide victory commensurate with their clear on-stage dominance.
In the past, the person playing that role was Donald Trump’s opponent. Trump, on the other hand, would struggle to answer questions, and, as Kamala Harris recently proved, is very easily triggered and distracted. Despite this, he’s still here… nearly a decade on!
It must have been bewildering to Democrats. Even in the 2015/16 Republican primaries, Trump was dominating a field of educated, experienced politicians. Who, whatever you think of them, clearly knew their briefs. During the general election debates, Hilary Clinton — again, despite what you think of her — was arguably the most qualified candidate to run for president of all time. Yes, polls concluded she won the debates, but it clearly wasn’t a game changer, was it, Madam President?
But here we are, Trump is still very much in the game despite his inferior debate style. I know Trump wasn’t on stage last night, but the principle still applied. This time, however, switching party allegiances.
