The 2024 presidential race took another fascinating turn after the debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump last night. What was expected to be a tit-for-tat contest ended up revealing the complex and subtle dynamics at play in this year’s election, especially since the dropping out of current President Biden. Harris, who at times was secondary figure in the Biden administration — perhaps, given her role on the border, that was a blessing in disguise — now emerged stronger than some expected. Meanwhile, Trump naively doubled down on his well-worn tactics but seemed slightly more vulnerable.

Kamala Harris’s Resurgence

For months, Democrats quietly worried whether Kamala Harris had the strength and finesse to go head-to-head with Trump. A fair concern considering her 2020 primary run; but after this debate, those fears will continue to diminish. Harris displayed a level of control and sharpness in her arguments, directly attacking Trump’s legal troubles, his mishandling of the January 6 insurrection, and his refusal to let go of the 2020 election loss.
