Democrats’ insistence on playing fair will cost them greatly.
Republicans don’t have to be good when Democrats are this bad.
The human cost of the fall of Kabul to the Taliban is the most important thing. In the short-term the safety of civilians, with particular focus on woman and girls, ought to be a priority.
In the medium term, securing visas for those in danger and those who supported the US and allied effort is important.
In the longer-term? It’s unpleasant to speculate, I don’t believe what the Taliban are saying about respecting human rights. Some suggest “pictures of sex-slave women and beheaded men” are weeks, if not days, away.
But politics does not take time off, and the president’s approval rating has fallen below 50% for the first time in light of what has happened in Afghanistan.
Something so consequential rightly warrants oversight. The backlash so far against the Biden administration has been swift and bipartisan. This time, it is not just Fox News doing their usual set-piece, the New York Times called it a “humiliating final act”, POLITICO described it as a “cataclysmic series of events…the most devastating period of the Biden presidency”, while Axios succinctly call it “Biden’s stain”.
