The concept of an “October Surprise” has a long history in U.S. elections, referring to unexpected, game-changing events that emerge late in the campaign season and potentially shift the election’s outcome. It is rooted in political lore and has seen instances from the Iran-Contra scandal revelations in 1980 to the FBI’s 2016 reopening of the Clinton email investigation. This tradition of surprises often plays on the heightened drama of the final weeks of a heated race, with candidates scrambling to gain or recover momentum. Made even spicier considering the potentially life-changing consequences the former President will encounter if he does lose.

In 2024, I just don’t see anything happening to Harris. Instead, an October Surprise could be tied to Donald Trump, specifically, him dropping out of the race.

While such an idea may sound extreme, the combination of his mounting legal troubles and the unprecedented nature of this election makes it a plausible — if not shocking — scenario.
